Background: Appendicitis in the neonatal period is an extremely rare condition. Intussusception caused by acute pseudocystic appendicitis in a premature infant has not been described in the literature to our knowledge.
Materials and methods: We report the case of a 29-week premature infant, who presented with vomiting and blody diarrhea on day 3 of life. Infection parameters were elevated. Abdominal ultrasound showed no manifestation of necrotizing enterocolitis but there was the strong suspicion of a duplication cyst of the colon ascendens. Laparotomy revealed an intussusception of the appendix. Histopathological examination confirmed the inverted appendix with pseudocystic infection.
