Objectives: There are several methods introduced for treatment of large bony defects in revision acetabular components. Some authors suggested that Jumbo cups are useful for these patients. In current prospective study, we investigated the midterm the clinical, radiographic and functional outcomes of acetabular revision using Jumbo cups.
Methods: Between 2004 and 2008, 51 consecutive patients underwent uncemented revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) in current prospective study. Nine patients lost during follow up. The remaining patients were followed for 8.6±4.9 years.
Results and Conclusion: Unfortunately, aseptic implant loosening occurred in two patients who required re-revision surgery. One patient experienced dislocation. Radiolucency around the bone-implant interface was found in other 4 patients, however, none of these patients suffered from instability. No patient developed infection or thromboembolic events. The Harris hip score (HHS) averaged 81.4±14.6. Based on the HHS, the functional outcomes were excellent in 5 patients, good in 17 patients, fair in 13 patients and poor in 7 patients. The findings of our study confirms that using Jumbo cups for acetabular revision with large bony defects leads to almost satisfactory functional, clinical and radiographic outcomes without complications.
