Background: Healthcare organisations form the fundamental structure of healthcare systems providing patient care. Two working groups from the German Society of Medical Sociology (DGMS) and the German Network Health Services Research (DNVF) recently analysed that in health services research (HSR) in Germany, healthcare organisations are often considered only as a study setting, without taking the organisational nature into account theoretically and methodologically.
Aims and research question: We aim to close this gap and to create a stronger conceptual anchoring by conducting a scoping workshop within the interdisciplinary international scientific community in the field of Organisational Health Services Research (OHSR). Firstly, we will generate a development roadmap and research agenda on OHSR in Germany. Secondly, we will refine and strengthen the conceptual underpinnings of OHSR in Germany, including terminology, theory, and specific methods. Thirdly, we will build sustainable networks between previously mostly disconnected disciplines in the field of OHSR in Germany and between the German and the international community. Fourthly, we will facilitate the international perspective, connectedness and visibility of the German research community in the field. Lastly, we will empower researchers to advance the field of OHSR and increase research capacity in OHSR in the future.
Methods: In a three-day scoping workshop funded by the VW Foundation up to n=40 renowned national and international researchers on OHSR will come together to work on the before-mentioned aims. Different workshop formats and professional moderation will facilitate the development process and the discussions.
Results: The participants will produce a position paper that will set out a strategic framework and roadmap for the interdisciplinary further development of conceptual frameworks, theories, and research methods in this interdisciplinary field.
Discussion: The position paper offers researchers and funding institutions a sound scientific basis on which to develop the field of OHSR within an international network.
Research implications: A sustainable establishment and consolidation of Organisational Health Services Research (OHSR) in Germany, drawing on the experiences of national and international experts, will be crucial for informing future research activity and increasing the attractiveness of the field for early-career researchers.
