Objective
It is known, that after trabeculectomy an overproduction of collagen, type I and II, in the inner layer of conjunctiva causes tenon cysts. After an application of latanoprost a reduced production of collagen type I, III, IV and VI has been shown in the experiments with monkeys. This study should demonstrate the influence of latanoprost on the development of tenon cysts after trabeculectomy (TET).
Methods
25 eyes of 25 patients have been treated with latanoprost after TET for 6 weeks once daily in a prospective study. In a control group of 25 eyes of 25 patients same operating procedure was performed without application of latanoprost. The follow-up was scheduled for 1, 2 and 4 weeks, and 3 and 6 months after the TET, where the development of the tenon cysts was registered. The results of both groups were compared by cross-matching.
Results
In the treated group with latanoprost we have seen an occurrence of tenon cysts in 16% of the patients compared to the 28 % in the untreated group (Fisher-Exact-Test).
Conclusions
An effectiv reduction of the development of the tenon cysts could be suspected by the results of the study. Nevertheless further clinical investigation with higher number of patients is needed to estimate the influence of 6 week application of latanoprost after TET more precisely.
