Background: Trauma is a sudden and unexpected event which can change the victims life in many different fashions.
Methods: Case report
Results: A young male suffered a penetrating ocular injury with an intraocular foreign body retention. Rapidly endophthalmitis developed with gas bubble formation in the vitreous cavity. Complete lens removal, pars plana vitrectomy and foreign body extraction was done followed by silicone oil injection. The eye quieted down but extensive PVR with tractional retinal detachment developed together with silicone oil induced keratopathy. After second surgery with extensive retinectomy the retina is attached with some retinal membrane present and the cornea cleared up.
Conclusion: In trauma cases every effort is to be done to preserve the eye and as much of its function as it is possible. Often several surgeries are necessary to achieve acceptable result but the patient and the surgeon must not be discouraged by this.
