Objective: To assist ophthalmologists and administrators in developing a funding mechanism for treating ocular trauma patients.
Design/Methods: Description of funding methods for operating an Eye Trauma Center
Results: Significant financial resources are required in order to operate an Eye Trauma Center able to provide 24/7 coverage, the ability to diagnose and treat the full spectrum of ocular and orbital injuries, access to appropriate consultants, and maintain a trauma registry. Additional required institutional resources include facility, staff, and a quality assurance mechanism. Legislative initiatives, our institution’s approach to this challenge will be presented in detail. This approach in some form may become a useful model for other institutions.
Conclusions: Sub-specialty Trauma Centers, such as a Level I Eye Trauma Center can be organized, however, the potential financial burden on the institution can be significant. Thus, mechanisms must be developed to defray the cost for providing this service.
