Purpose: To report the utility of topical anaesthesia for surgical repair of open globe injuries in selected patients.
Patients & Methods: In this non-comparative interventional case series, out of 289 eyes of open globe injuries, sixy three eyes with open globe injury were repaired under topical anaesthesia.
Results: Six patients had mild discomfort during surgery. No patient had surgical or anaesthesia related adverse effects. The pre- and post-operative clinical photographs document the prototype case for which corneal wound repair was done under topical anaesthesia.
Conclusions: Topical anaesthesia is safe and effective and could be reasonable alternative for less severe open globe injuries. However, surgical training & patient preparation are the keys to the safe use of this technique.
