Background: Personal and environmental factors play an important role for reaching the most successful rehabilitation after of CI patients. We analyzed these factors and their influence on the contentment and success of the implantation.
Methods: In a prospective, longitudinal section study we interviewed 14 juvenile and adult CI patients using similar questions before cochlear implantation and two times after therapy. In addition we interviewed family members living at the same place two times after therapy.
Results: Rehabilitation and self practice seem to be most important to CI patients. Contacts to other CI patients and to their partners are also very helpful. Not just the training of hearing, but also behavioral strategies (training of communication) are most important to reach the best results in CI rehabilitation.
Conclusion: This study reveals that it is necessary to include communicational aspects in your therapy to reach a successful CI rehabilitation. The isolate training of speaking and hearing is not enough for a sufficient rehabilitation.
