Introduction: Hydatid cysts occur most commonly in the liver, followed by the lung. In the head and neck region hydatid cysts have been reported in the orbit, the thyroid and the parotid gland.
Methods: A 16 y.o. girl was referred for a mass at the floor of the mouth. A CT showed a cyst with prominent walls and low density of 14-20 HU, sized 4,6/4,7cm. The cyst was excised via a neck incision.
Results: Histology proved a hydatid cyst. Pulmonary scan and liver ultrasound were done revealing a 10cm cyst in the liver which was operated. The patient currently is on Zentel and follow up.
Conclusions: We report, as to our knowledge, only the fourth case of such a cyst in the floor of the mouth. Although a rare location, this must be included in the differential diagnosis, but requires a high index of suspicion.
